MLS laser therapy
Here at WitsEnd we are always on the lookout for new methods of relieving pain, aiding mobility and improving quality of life for our four legged customers.
One of the most exciting forms of treatment that we have begun to use in recent years is that of MLS (Multiwave Locked System) laser therapy, one of the latest forms of laser therapy.
What is MLS laser therapy?
Laser therapy is the use of wavelengths of light to treat troublesome conditions. MLS laser therapy has been successful in helping with the treatment and management of a range on conditions including arthritis, tendonitis, lameness, cruciate injuries, hip dysplasia, disc disease and surgery, post-surgical swelling, muscle injuries and general wounds.
How does it work?
MLS can be very effective in treating pain and inflammation and when we study the effects of lasers on cells it is easy to understand why:
- Reduced pain responses by reducing nerve transmission and inflammatory mediators
- Decreased swelling by reducing blood flow and some of the inflammatory mediators known to be involved in the swelling response
- Reduced inflammation through a number of processes including a reduction of COX2 inflammatory mediators which are known to promote inflammation
- Wound healing is accelerated by an increase in the oxygenated blood to the injured area
- Reduces scar tissue and improves tendon strength and elasticity by improving the alignment of collagen fibres.
- Regenerates muscle tissue by activating myogenic satellite cells.
WitsEnd’s Dr Shahad Mohammed is a fully qualified veterinary physiotherapist with over 12 years of experience and is a member of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP). He has used MLS Laser Therapy system since April 2016.
When most dogs and cats come to WitsEnd, they present with pain, inflammation and swelling, reduced muscle mass and reduced mobility. Using the MLS Laser system we can begin to resolve some pain and inflammation. By combining laser therapy with physiotherapy we can reduce your pet’s discomfort, stimulate healing and improve your pet’s mobility. If your dog is improving, we can also use hydrotherapy, as and when it is considered to be appropriate, to help with your dog’s recovery.
